James Beckwourth is an African American on an 1820s fur-trading expedition when he is captured by the Crow tribe. Among the Crow he rapidly becomes a vaunted leader. But the violence of Crow life leads him to ask himself, “Where do I really belong?”

On the run from trouble in St. Louis in 1824, James Beckwourth joins an expedition out West. As a freed slave, he struggles for respect, which comes to a head when he and Ashley, the leader of the expedition, hold each other at gunpoint. James is captured by the Crow, but a birthmark causes them to think he is a lost member of their tribe, kidnapped as a child. Beckwourth rises to prominence among the Crow due to his bravery and skill at warfare, but the violence of Crow life leads him to ask himself, “Where do I really belong?”
