England, 1681: Shy due to a facial birthmark, Madge spends lonely days serving in her father’s inn. One night, she overhears some quiet words not intended for her ears. Heartbroken, she flees home to travel with an unusual minstrel, determined to rid herself of the mark on her cheek in hopes of becoming the girl she desperately wants to be.
Marked from birth, Madge is achingly lonely as she spends her days serving guests at the inn her father keeps.
One day in the marketplace, she meets with Keaton, an ill-formed minstrel, whose kind heart begins to cure her insecurity. Soon after, she happens upon someone else in an isolated wood. Though the encounter leaves her horribly embarrassed, it gives her hope that she won’t always be unnoticed and alone.
But then, she overhears a few quiet words not intended for her ears. Heartbroken, Madge flees home to join Keaton and his companion, a crass juggler. Together the three travel from town to town, earning their daily bread. All the while, Madge quietly seeks to remove the mark on her face.
Set in 17th century England, With Face Aflame is the tale of a girl who risks everything in hopes of becoming the person she desperately wants to be.
